Character Name Already Taken

Hello. I haven't played since the rumors of the servers trading hands. I assumed my account would be dead and followed the steps to make a new one. Upon character creation it says my name is already taken, and it's not exactly on the default list. Does my old account still exist? Because I'd love to have everything back again.
